Valencia Marathon 2025 - Expert Coaching From a Runner Who Knows the Course

If you’re one of the lucky runners with a place in the 2025 Valencia Marathon, you already know you’re in for a fast, exciting race in one of Europe’s most runner-friendly cities. But simply getting to the start line is only half the journey. How you train and prepare between now and race day will determine how you perform, and how you feel crossing that unforgettable finish line.

I ran this race myself in 2024 and 2023 and have coached a number of runners to personal bests and first time marathon finishes.  I know what it feels like to pace the early miles through the wide, fast avenues, when to push, when to hold back, and where runners often go wrong.

If you’re racing the Valencia Marathon, this December and want structured support, expert insight, and personalised coaching with first hand knowledge of this particular marathon, now’s the time to take that next step. Click here to learn about my coaching options.

My Valencia Marathon training block starts on 17 August, and I have a few coaching places remaining.

Discovering Valencia: The City of Running

Valencia has earned its nickname, the “City of Running, ‘Ciudad del Running,’ for good reason. It is described as, ’Plano, Rápido, Soleado’, flat, fast and sunny.  The city is an amazing blend of old-world charm with modern design from narrow lanes and historic plazas to sleek architecture in the City of Arts and Sciences, where the Valencia Marathon 2025 starts and finishes. Valencia even offers wide, sandy beaches just a stone’s throw away from the city centre, perfect for a post-race shake out.

With the marathon taking place in early December, runners and spectators will be treated to a vibrant and festive city with beautifully decorated streets and plazas.  Make sure to take in the Christmas spirit at the Plaza de Ayuntamiento in the city centre.

An ideal way to experience what this city has to offer is to take a Hop on Hop Off bus tour; ideal for saving the legs for race day too!

Transport in Valencia is well organised and includes a comprehensive bus service, metro and trams.  Valencia Marathon runners are also treated to free transport on the day of the race.

Why Valencia Marathon Is Built for PBs, But Still Has Pitfalls

The Valencia Marathon Trinidad Alfonso is known globally for its fast course and world-class organisation. Its flat elevation profile, minimal turns, and sea-level altitude make it ideal for runners chasing a personal best.

That said, having raced this marathon, I know that fast does not mean easy. Many runners go out too hard, misjudge the long stretches around the harbour, or underestimate the psychological dips between key landmarks.

Temperatures for marathon day vary from 12 to 17°C (mid-50s to low 60s Fahrenheit).  In 2023, we went from a cool frosty morning to a sunny afternoon with temperatures of 22°C.  I was, however, happy to have had an early start and to finish before temperatures started to rise. Last year was not quite as warm and I needed a warm sweatshirt to wear post race.

When I coach runners for Valencia Marathon, I build strategy into the plan, not just mileage and workouts. We simulate race-day pacing. We practice marathon fuelling based on aid station locations. And we talk through course landmarks so nothing feels unfamiliar on the day. These small details often make the biggest difference.

Lessons from the Valencia Marathon Course

Here are a few key lessons I have learned after running this course:

  • Give yourself adequate time for taking care of your bag drop, last minute toilet stops and the walk to the start line.

  • Don't get sucked in early, the wide streets and fast start can make your target pace feel too easy. Stay patient.

  • Be prepared for temperatures rising as the morning progresses.

  • The final kilometre is electric – Practice finishing strong so you can enjoy the blue-carpet moment and the cheering fans all around.

Here’s what a few of my runners have said after working with me for Valencia

Linzi: 'As this was to be my fourth marathon I made some major changes from previous marathon plans...I got a coach. Hands down, best decision ever. Weekly video calls throughout the 16 wks discussing the previous weeks training. Bespoke plan to suit my life/work and goals. Constant support and encouragement not to forget the vast wealth of knowledge you get from someone who has walked the walk and like me just loves the discipline of marathon training.'

David: 'Valencia was my goal race of the year, and I came in with high expectations. The structured block we built together helped me peak at the right time. Nailed my fuelling and ran a 5-minute PB.'
